The project Jüdische Pflegegeschichte / Jewish Nursing History – Biographies and Institutions in Frankfurt am Main is devoted to Jewish nursing history in Frankfurt am Main. The time focus, in view of the vast amount of information, is on the period from 1870, the beginning of modern Jewish nursing in Frankfurt, to the end of National Socialism. This project provides a rich source of information not only for family biographical research as well as scientific research; but also for anyone who is interested in Jewish social and cultural history and in the history of the city of Frankfurt am Main.

The project is located at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, realised with the generous support of many sponsors. Starting in 2009 it provides information on persons who influenced Jewish nursing care, their family histories, regional background, education, workplace, successes, struggles and failures. Finally many were forced into exile or deported to extermination camps.

Dealing with nursing history opens up many research fields: biography, social and cultural history of nurses, history of institutions and buildings that functioned as hospitals or care institutions, professional associations and foundations, history of ideas and concepts of nursing as related to religion and political culture and the ways in which these concepts were put into practice. Nursing history is also an aspect of women’s history: nursing and the founding of Jewish hospitals and nursing institutions in Frankfurt was primarily a women’s domain.
