In this online one-day conference, we will critically examine the relationship between AI and Jewish Studies education. Our goal is to examine the way AI is transforming Jewish Education by introducing new tools for scholarship, changing pedagogies, and introducing new forms of antisemitism.

We welcome all participants with an interest in our shared goal. This includes current and new members of EAJS.  Participants can come from backgrounds in Jewish Studies or Computer Science/AI, as long as, you have interests that overlap with all of these domains. Participants with experience and expertise in this field are, of course, welcome, but so are newcomers.  Interested participants must submit either a) a 300-500-word abstract or b) a prior published work related to the conference topic.  Exploratory papers and papers that discuss emergent usage practices are encouraged.  During the workshop, we will have keynote speakers from both Jewish Studies and Computer Science, and a topical panel discussion on AI and teaching, antisemitism, and research. Potential topics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • AI and Teaching: responsible student use of AI; ways of supporting students to become critical AI users; opportunities and pitfalls in the use of AI to design teaching and assessment materials for Jewish Studies topics (e.g. Hebrew/Yiddish teaching; Jewish history, etc.).
  • AI and Antisemitism: discussion of the role of AI in identifying, analysing, amplifying, and combating antisemitism, including questions of bias, representation, and misinformation in AI-generated and AI-mediated content.
  • AI and Research: discussion of AI toolchain usage and prompt construction (what kind of AI do you use and how do you frame your prompts) to support historical, linguistic, literary, and other forms of research in Jewish Studies; reflections on which areas in Jewish Studies research AI shows promise.

Please note this workshop is only open to EAJS members; however, we encourage people with relevant interests to join EAJS. If you are a non-Member from Computer Science, please reach out to Jen and Lily before listing us as referees. Please note the membership fee is quite low (even free for PhD students) and is income-dependent, with a maximum fee of £60 per year (and discounted prices for 4-year memberships). See more on the fee structure here: https://www.eurojewishstudies.org/membership/applications/.

Please consult the workshop website for more details.

We hope to have you in attendance to explore the role of AI in Jewish Studies.
